The guns are a fun way to make the ride a bit more interesting and also less scary for younger kids or those who can be frightened by this kind of thing. Towers Trading on Towers Street is the biggest of the gift shops and sells the largest selection of merchandise in the park, sweets and other trinkets.

New for this year are the personalised souvenir machines which are really cool so check them out if you fancy having your name next to your favourite ride on items like notebooks or key rings. The food is okay, standard theme park grub, but it is nice enough and offers a good place to have a rest, warm up, refuel and avoid the weather.

All of these arcades are in shelter away from the weather but, as I said, this will cost money so be prepared for that. For thrill riders, it is a case of timing it so for the rides with sections of their queues under cover, like Thirteen or Smiler which have fairly large indoor queue areas or Galatica where the stations are large and sheltered, you are starting the queue in the indoor area rather than waiting in the rain.

So these are our top ideas for what to do on a rainy day at Alton Towers. The weather can be unpredictable especially in the spring and autumn months but there is still plenty to do at the park when the rain hits!

Search Advanced search. Post Mon Jun 16, pm Hi! Myself and a friend are thinknig of heading to Towers on Wednesday and as there isn't another topic on this that I can find :P , just wondering what people's experiences are in the heavy rain, and any tips specifically for this type of weather? Is it even a good idea to go? Thanks to Ian for the sig! Post Mon Jun 16, pm Alton always seems more magical in the rain, and it may be less buisier.

However, many of the Q's are not covered, so take an anorak! Post Mon Jun 16, pm There is also the possibility that major rides will close, depending on the amount of precipitation and it usually takes a fair bit of rain in the UK before rides shut.

But as Nemair said, the park should be less populated. Last edited by IronDan on Mon Jun 16, pm, edited 1 time in total. Post Mon Jun 16, pm Weather can be bad fairly often, this being the UK Most rides won't close as they're designed to work in rain, but as various announcements in the queue will say, the rides do become slightly more uncomfortable, most notably Rita and Nemesis.

The rides I find don't tend to become too much worse unless the rean is consistently heavy, then they stop being fun and usually the ride crews will suspend operations until the weather passes. If you can cope with being wet and having rain pelted in your face on Rita's launch, you'll be absolutely fine.

Post Mon Jun 16, pm Thanks for all the advice so far, keep it coming. Theres also the fact that not a lot of people actually check the weather, and seeing as the weather patterns in the moorlands are quite bizarre, end up being caught out because 'birmingham was dry when we left! Plus it's only if it has A been raining for days up to the date of your visit and B it's a definate forcast for rain all over the country that people will even think about weather, not many people just wake up one morning and say, hey, let's go towers!

Post Mon Jun 16, pm Always worth a visit in the rain. The park is often very quiet, with queue rides being to a minimum. The best bit is sometimes it starts to brighten up. If its half way through the day, people are put off from coming to the park, so its sunny and empty. Best of both worlds Rita can be a bit painful in the rain though!

Post Mon Jun 16, pm Rides can be faster and more intense in the rain Nemesis, back-row, right hand seat in the rain Top notch :P. I advise taking something warm. Perhaps a change of clothes if you just cannot resist the temptation of riding Battle Galleons or Ripsaw. Nothing like a hot cup of coffee to warm you up.
